Leicester Tigers Stun Champions Northampton Saints in Second-Half Blitz
Leicester Tigers surged to second in the Gallagher Premiership with a dominant 28-7 victory over defending champions Northampton Saints.

Tigers Turn on the Power at Welford Road
Leicester Tigers produced a masterclass in second-half rugby to dismantle defending Gallagher Premiership champions Northampton Saints with a commanding 28-7 victory at a rain-soaked Mattioli Woods Welford Road.
Despite trailing at the interval in testing East Midlands conditions, Dan McKellar's side unleashed a relentless wave of pressure after the break, crossing for four unanswered tries to secure their third victory in four league outings. The result extends Leicester's formidable home dominance over their local rivals, stretching their winning run on home soil against the Saints to four consecutive seasons.
Wet Weather Catches Out Tigers Early
Persistent rain and swirling winds heavily influenced the opening exchanges. Northampton seized the initiative inside the first seven minutes when fly-half Fin Smith sent a delicate tactical chip toward the try line. Following a handling error in the slippery conditions by Billy Searle, James Pater reacted quickest to pounce and dot down, with Smith slotting the extras.
Leicester gradually worked their way back into the arm-wrestle. England full-back Freddie Steward narrowed the deficit in the 19th minute, striking a magnificent long-range penalty cleanly through the uprights from just inside the Northampton half.
While the score remained 7-3 in favor of the visitors at half-time, an ill-tempered flashpoint down the touchline as the teams walked off previewed a bruising and fiercely contested second period.
Four-Try Salvo Decides the Contest
The home side sparked into life just four minutes after the restart. A trademark driving maul functioned with ruthless efficiency, rumbling inexorably toward the whitewash before Jamie Blamire grounded the ball.
Leicester's forward momentum proved impossible to contain. Moments later, sharp handling to the left flank allowed Gabriel Hamer-Webb to release Cameron Henderson, who powered over cleanly in the corner.
The decisive blow arrived on 57 minutes. Following sustained pressure that forced a beleaguered Northampton pack into illegally collapsing a rolling maul, flanker Finn Carnduff burrowed over from close range. Searle subsequently added a penalty to establish a decisive two-score cushion.
As discipline frayed within the visiting ranks, Northampton replacement Tom Lockett was shown a yellow card for a high tackle with ten minutes remaining. The Tigers instantly rubbed salt into the wounds, sealing a vital bonus point when Searle's pinpoint long pass found Steward, who coasted in untouched beneath the posts to cap off a stellar afternoon for the hosts.
Bristol Overcome Exeter in Attrition Battle
Elsewhere in the Gallagher Premiership, Bristol Bears climbed to third in the league standings following a gritty 20-7 triumph over Exeter Chiefs.
Battling appalling weather conditions at Ashton Gate, Bristol secured their fifth consecutive league victory against Rob Baxter's side in a classic, hard-fought rugby war of attrition dictated by heavy rain and fierce gusts.
